But instead of 24 hours, we have 3 weeks. (A bit better!) Not an announcement "I am coming for the keys." Did you keep a record of the times you called to get information from him? Most leases have a month to month portion after the original lease expires or some clause to the effect of what happens when the original lease expires. Your not having paid the rent after the first year does create some problem I'd guess. If you have paid it in full now then you may be okay on that account. Still not paying rent is never a good idea, even if there is not a "in-force" lease. I had a landlord like that - and yes - everything was blamed on an accident umpteen years ago. While that may have been true - this scuz would take the money, pocket it - refuse to give receipts, refuse to accept checks - cash rent only (However I did use checks and if you have checks - you are home free!), refuse to hand you a bill for utilities (which I finally contacted the utility company about - they were unaware that he was renting out anything - and the amount I HAD paid in the past - covered the landlord's bill)<br /><br />Regardless - DO gather together ALL evidence that you have paid for rent and utilities - and present it to your atty - and if you don't have one - talk to a public counsel. I'm not sure where you live, but there are laws regarding eviction.
